Google Rankings – Effects of normal and abnormal links
Have your ranking suffered after the release of Penguin update by Google? The possibility is that this relates to the lack of natural and quality links to your website. Penguin update has been introduced by Google to counter the spamming of the web with low quality links.
Google primarily considers the number of links to a website as a measure of its popularity. Hence, the ranking theoretically should depend on the number of links. To ensure the reliability of ranking Google does an analysis of the quality, quantity and relevance of the websites linked to you. The algorithm also includes the speed with which these links were acquired and also the anchor text in the linking website. Any abnormal behavior in these factors can affect the credibility of the website. The way to attract links is basically to have good content on the website.
If you examine the websites that has been affected by the Penguin update, you may notice that all of them have less natural links. Following were the common problems noticed in such websites.
One of the methods adopted was to obtain links with entirely matching anchor text. Google consider such links as paid links and would disregard them. Google also can detect comment spam where anchor text is inserted in the signatures or user name.
The Penguin affected sites had links from guest comments posted in websites with articles of doubtful quality with more focus on anchor text rather than providing information.
Some of these disqualified sites also had links from posts in article marketing sites having exact matching anchor text. Some of the sites which lost their Google rank had links from sites having malware, several popup and other spamming software.
As you can notice, the Penguin update only confirms to the existing Google policy to find and neutralize attempts to gain higher rankings using unacceptable methods. If you are aiming at getting and maintaining a good Google rank avoid using all the unnatural methods mentioned in this article.
